I make paintings of interiors and portraits using high key colors, perspective distortion, playfulness with scale, and floods of color to build compositions that shake up my own expectations of the worlds and moments my children inhabit. I observe my daughters in arcades - the way they glow from the candy and the choices. But these spaces make me feel insane. They push speed and competition, and package it as “fun.” The weighty responsibility of mothering young children, the memory of play dredged up from my own childhood, a fraught relationship with the excess of capitalism - all of this is bubbling up in my practice. I absorb and recombine the visual language, the mood of these hectic spaces with their unnatural lighting, intensifying the sensory experience. I am a witness to my daughters, until I find a mirror and look into it. I am surprised by the nakedness of my own exaggerated expressions, but I can’t keep my face from making them. It is a response to the necessity of happiness, of smiling, of modeling achievement and teaching it too, of productivity, of accumulation, of consumerism. Overstimulated and saturated, it’s all moving too fast, and it’s going and going - gone.
